Data access is important to you. It's critical to the success of your institution, your instructors, and ultimately your learners. That message came through loud and clear – especially when you flooded the room at Fusion 2016 for a breakout session on data access and the Brightspace Data Platform.
Bolstered by that clear and unequivocal message (and many supporting messages before and after that fateful day), and we've been working hard to make clear and decisive progress on our data strategy. In accordance with that we have significantly expanded our offering to bring you the Brightspace Data Sets via our Data Hub tool.
What are the Brightspace Data Sets?
A set of 47 CSV extracts, the Brightspace Data Sets deliver data that is critical for institutional reporting. Each extract contains raw, user level data and the extracts are designed so you can easily combine it with data from other extracts and other relevant systems in your institutional ecosystem. These data sets were developed by collaborating with clients and partners to identify the scope and format for the data.
How fresh is this data?
The Brightspace Data Sets are updated daily. They are generated automatically, so you can download the extracts you need when they are relevant to your reporting cadence.
Sounds great! When can I get my hands on them?
As of the April 2017 release, the Brightspace Data Sets are available for Brightspace Insights clients and clients on the new Brightspace Core package. To learn more about Brightspace Insights or the new Brightspace Core package, contact your D2L Account Manager.
Where do I find the Brightspace Data Sets?
You can access the Brightspace Data Sets from the Data Hub in the Learning Environment. The Data Hub is just what it sounds like – a central place to access your data. The user interface provides a straightforward mechanism to download the data sets you need, and the Data Hub API routes provide programmatic access to the data sets. The new Data Hub Administration Guide provides an overview of these features and instructions for enabling the Brightspace Data Sets for appropriate roles in your organization.
A word of caution
The Brightspace Data Sets contain critical institutional data, including user data. Therefore, you should identify and leverage your institution's policies on data privacy to guide access to, and storage and lifecycle of this data, before rolling out this tool.
How can I leverage this data?
The Data Hub data sets are available as zipped CSVs. You can import this into your database to use with your favorite BI tool or use a tool like Excel to start integrating, slicing and dicing as your reporting needs dictate. Stay tuned to the Brightspace DevCoP for samples and tools to help you get the most out of this data.
What's next for data access?
Please share your feedback on the Brightspace Data Sets via the Brightspace DevCoP forums so that we can continue to address your institutional reporting needs. We want to know how you're using this data, what data you'd like to see added to the Brightspace Data Sets, and how we can improve your experience with this feature. You can also use the forums to raise any questions or issues you encounter when using the Brightspace Data Sets. We also hope you'll join us at Fusion 2017 to provide your feedback in person and hear about what's new and what's coming in our data access strategy.
